Things that move – All about Transport

In the first few weeks of Term 3 we have been looking at different forms of transport and how we rely on transport to take us and other things from one place to another.

During our Fun Friday experiences we have talked about forms of air transport, including planes, helicopters, rockets and hot air balloons.  Prep J students made their own hot air balloons and wrote about what they would see while travelling in a hot air balloon.

” I would see lots of trees and the water and the sea.  It would be really high.”Anahera

“In my hot air balloon I would go up to the moon” – Bill

“I could see my house when I am up high.“- Nehemiah

“I would be able to touch the clouds.”- Lilah

Last Friday we looked at forms of water transport such as boats, ships, canoes and submarines.  The children created a boat of their own, wrote about where they would travel on their boat and what they would take on the boat.

We are singing several new songs about transport

– Yellow Submarine

– Zoom to the moon

– Up Up Up

Spelling Words:

Each week we learn a group of spelling words.  During our spelling time each day we practice reading and writing our spelling words.  We play games such as “tic tac toe” and “race around the world.”  We practice writing our spelling words on chalkboards, paper and whiteboards and using play-dough and letter magnets.

We also enjoy using the website “Spelling City” to help us recognize our weekly words.

Working hard and having fun!

We have had a busy few months in our class room and have been working hard on our reading, writing spelling and maths

In Term two we looked at the topic of Fairy Tales and many of our literacy and maths activities were related to fairy tales including Cinderella, the 3 little pigs, Goldilocks and the three bears and Jack and the Beanstalk.  We read many of these stories and also looked at different versions of these fairy tales which are called Fractured Fairy tales.   The children enjoyed writing retells and narratives about their favorite fairy tales and creating our own fractured fairy tales!

As part of this Fairy Tale festival we had a performance by Carp Productions in May.  The children met Goldilocks, Grandma, a sly wolf and Cinderella’s handsome prince.

We had lots of fun when some fairy tale characters from Carp Productions came to visit us!

Books Give You Brains!

The children are enjoying the many books we have been reading in class and are regularly taking part in different types of reading activities to help them become more confident readers.

Sometimes if you come into our classrooms you will see us all reading a book in silence. This is important daily activity is called Sustained reading.  Children in our prep class choose several books to read silently and uninterrupted for 10 minutes to 15 minutes at their table or on the floor or cushions in our room.  This allows them the opportunity to focus on reading words and comprehending pictures in a book without being distracted by things going on around them.   Our sustained reading time is usually after recess and the children look forward to this time each day and are developing into fantastic Sustained Readers.

Super Spelling

In Term 3 our prep students have begun learning a weekly list of spelling words.  Each week we work on 8 words that are usually three letter words with the same two letters at the end of each word.  This spelling strategy is called Onset and Rime.  This spelling strategy  assists the children to recognize common chunks within words. It can also help students decode new words when reading and  help them spell words when writing.   During the week we complete lots of fun spelling activities including writing our words in chalk or on a whiteboard, making our words using play-dough and  playing spelling games on the Interactive whiteboard.

Our Spelling words this week: “ap” words

  • map
  • sap
  • cap
  • tap
  • rap
  • zap
  • chap
  • lap

We hope you have enjoyed seeing what we have been up to in Prep J over the last few months.

Welcome to Prep J

                                                                           Working hard decorating our sunflowers

Welcome to our amazing Prep grade!

We have had a fantastic start to the year and everyone has settled in well to the school routine. The children have attended full days for four days a week in February with Wednesdays off to enable us to complete individual testing with each child.  All our Preps will begin full time school from Monday March 4th.

At the moment we are learning about letters of the alphabet, how each letter sounds and how it is written  in upper and lower case.   We have been writing letters in play dough, confetti, paper tiles and shaving foam.  This has been lots of fun and a little bit messy!!

In our Maths studies we have been looking at the numbers 1 to 20,   2 dimensional shapes including circles, triangles, squares, rectangles and octagons and days of the week.  We are also doing some measuring activities and comparing the size of objects, animals and ourselves.

Every Friday is Fun Friday at Frankston East Primary School.   As part of Fun Friday over the last few weeks we have been looking at the Sun,  Beach and Water safety,  Friendship and Getting along and completing lots of literacy related activities.   We have read The Rainbow Fish,  Where is the green sheep, The Magic Beach, Who sank the boat? and  There’s a sea in my bedroom.   Fun Friday craft activities have included making sunflowers, decorating rainbow fish and writing and drawing our favourite characters from Who sank the boat?

Our preps have been given their reading folders and a list of M100W golden words, which are the first of the 100 most used words.  Each night the children are taking a reader and their golden words home to read with their family.  The children are all very keen to learn to read and we have had great supprt from the Prep J families to help with our morning reading activities each day.

We are looking forward to an exciting and busy year in Prep J.
